A Few Trout

Fat Trout Lookit', Lookit This One!  Absolutely Ticked That Dad Wouldn't Let Him Cut                                                                             All Better    I went out fishing int the rain last weekend. I was pleasantly surprised to get a few trout. I tried to cross to the main channel but the water was too deep. I ended up fishing just at the pit and ended up with 6. The weather was horrible, 33 degrees and raining, but being able to get some nice fish made up for it. Trapping starts this Friday, and I'm chomping at the bit. Fur prices are at 30 year highs and looking to stay strong.

Weather Blues

"Dad, I'm Swimming!"  Ice Skating  Building a Fire  "This is my Seat!" Nakolik-Inupiaq name for head because it looks like one Also reminds me of the sleeping giant north of Isle Royale I thought winter was shaping up very nicely here. Clearly mother nature had other plans. The weather here has been brutal lately. Raining almost nonstop. We were ice skating 2 weeks ago. I even ice fished on the river a couple of weeks ago. Now there is open water everywhere.  I made it out fishing on Saturday for a few hours. No trout, just a couple moldy salmon. Trapping season is right around the corner. I'm hoping the ice is good by then.

Hunting

"I'm not scared" Oren's New Hat Picking Blueberries Winter Wonderland I went on a moose hunting trip a couple of weekends ago. I took my boat down about 10 miles to Nunacruk. A long side channel that has some seriously good moose potential. We left early afternoon on Saturday. We planned on floating inside the creek and then finding a camping spot on a stretch of river where we could see for a distance both ways.  Nunacruk We stopped and hiked into a few different clearings, but we didn't see any moose. As we were leaving one of the spots Zachary slipped and fell in the river. We got to the other side and he hopped back out of the boat to change his clothes. While we were waiting there we heard a moose calling across from where we had just come. We hurried back to the other side and tried calling. It sounded like it was coming towards us for a bit, but it was directly downwind of us. It must have spooked before it got close

Moose Season

Image
It's Moose Season here! My tag runs from September 1 to September 20th. I have been out a few different times, but I haven't seen any moose yet. On Saturday Kayla, Oren, and I took a boat ride a little ways downriver to see if we could see a moose.   Breaking Sticks For a Fire    Cool Dude! Warm Jackets No moose, but it was a beautiful evening albeit a little on the chilly side.  Just Waiting (snow last friday)  View Across  Thurston's New Basket Sled  Sushi With Salmon Eggs

Yep, it snowed today. Looks like we have a couple of inches right now. I double checked the calendar to see if it was still August. It is...

A Bear Story

Last Monday night Kayla, Oren, and I decided to take a short ride down the river. We brought fishing rods and the grub box  (cooler) full of supplies to cook hot dogs for dinner. Stan and Doris had called earlier and had said that they were going to go down to Ukalailuk. We loaded up the boat and headed downriver. We were just around the bend from the pit and we ran across Stan and Doris. We almost stopped but then we couldn't make up our mind what we were going to do, so we just waved and kept on going. I figured we would make a fire at the mouth of Katchourak Creek, but the river was still too high to make a fire anywhere near there. We ended up going just a little ways further down to a long gravel beach scattered with willows. We proceeded to gather a pile of sticks and logs for our fire. For some reason I have been struggling to get fires lit this year. It took me a couple tries, but finally I got the fire going. Oren was chomping at the bit to start cooking a hot dog. I c

Brenden's Trip, Kelly River

Trout Stringer     Brenden is here for another visit. The first day he got here we went on a short trip downriver for salmon. It was lights out on salmon the whole night. Pixies were working, flies were working, and it seemed like there were salmon every where. We caught fish after fish until about 12:30 am. I decided that it was probably time to head back to make sure we weren't caught downriver after dark. I knew we still had to clean the fish too.   Pink Salmon       The water was super low to start with. I couldn't make it up to the pit to park the boat for the first 3 days that the boat was in the water. We had to park and then wade across the river to get back to the honda. I really abused my prop those first few tries. Day 2     On the way downriver that day I told Brenden, "Shoot! I forgot to grab the binoculars! If we see anything it probably won't be close." Sometime around 11 pm we were both fishing in the slough behind
