Round Trip to Trapping Camp

We went to camp to set/check a few traps and have some snacks. We also set up the wall tent. We had to put a rope between two trees for the ridge pole and chop some willows to clear out space for the tent. We staked out the tent by tyng rope to willows. It took for ever to get there and back. Marjaana's mukluks fell off many times! -ryker We went to the camp site and had snacks. It was a long trip. It was not light wen we came back. -Anya

Marjaana enjoying mom's new camp chair. Her mukluk covers are made out of beaver fur that the boys caught last season. They are warm, but kept falling off.
The boys set up the Arctic Oven over break. Now everything is ready for a quick weekend camp! Her mukluks look hilarious, but they are so toasty warm, which has always been a challenge for us with babies/toddlers. The cover comes off for more normal looking mukluks. The fur cover is to keep her feet warm as we travel....IF I can find a way to keep them from falling off. I've received some good advice so we will keep you posted!

Oren can keep himself busy forever outside-making fires, setting and checking traps, hunting, fishing, exploring.....

Field Trip Village Style

The elementary classes took a field trip to the river in April. The day was a little chilly and some kids ended up going home early, but everyone had fun. It took a lot of community help as Kids were divided into sleds and the caravan of snowmachines brought them just a little ways down from town. Then a few volunteers used augers to drill enough holes for everyone who wanted to fish! It took some patience, but Ryker finally caught one and was very excited. It took teamwork to get the hook out. Marjaana helped to chaperone too. She stayed snug as a bug in a rug under my jacket the whole time.

Hallelujah Night

Happy Halloween!  Instead of celebrating Halloween here, they have "Hallelujah Night" at the school, hosted by the Friends Church.  The night starts off with a "picnic lunch"--sandwiches, chips, apples, and juice.  Next everyone sings some songs, hosted by the minister/priest.  There was also a costume contest.  We voted for "best costume"-- kids that dressed up as biblical characters filed around the gym and we cheered.  The finale of the night was games for the kids.  They divided the kids into age groups and had games with prizes.  Everyone was sent away with a bag of treats.  In Noatak, they have Hallelujah Night in place of Halloween activities, like trick or treating.   Today:  11 degrees... the sun peeked above the mountains at 11:00 am....dipped below mountains at 6:00 pm In other news...
