Winter

Winter is here. We woke up to the first below zero temps this week. Daylight savings time really takes a bite out of limited daylight in the afternoon.

My fishing hotspot has been calling for weeks, and this weekend I was not disappointed. The Michigan football delayed my trip, because I decided to watch at least the first half. Well, the game just kept getting better, so I ended up watching the whole thing. Then the neighbor helped me get my boat up, finally.

 Trout

I didn't make it out fishing until about 3:30, but I made the most of it. This particular spot has been taunting me for quite a while. When I heard that people were catching trout at the pit I knew that being just downriver around the bend from the pit would be even better. I spudded my holes and got to fishing right away. The trout took a while to get there, but once they were there the action was fast until dark. I ended up with nine total. One big one, a few medium sized fish, and a couple small ones too. A high school kid came over by me right when it was getting dark and said he saw a three otters right around the bend. He ran out of bullets, so he drove over to me to see if I had any. I did. I also had my .22 so we cruised back to where he had last saw them. They never did show again.

 Ready To Fillet

The Dept of fish and game guys left me a tissue sample collection kit. They are testing DNA of the trout in the Noatak River to see where all the fish come from. From what I understood of their presentation is that the fish return to spawn where they were born. Trout from anywhere can winter over in the Noatak River. They have found trout tagged in the Noatak as far away as the North Slope and Russia. I was able to finally fill up some vials after this weekend.
